Reflecting pool under renovation

The National Mall’s Reflecting pool is amid renovation through 2012. The $30.5 million makeover will replace the 1930 original that has been leaking for years.

The new pool will recycle water to keep it from becoming stagnant. Walkways and lighting will also be updated.

It was really wild to see it without water — almost eerie! Everything was carefully partitioned off to keep visitors from peeking, but you could easily see what was happening from both the base of the Washington Monument and the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
