I joined Panda Nation

pandaNeeding to kill time one day and near the National Zoo, I thought why not drop in. It had been nearly 30 years since I strolled the grounds – where does the time go? — but it was much like I remembered.

I’d never seen a panda in person so I strolled over to its area first. Normally, there are long lines to see them, but February sees sparse crowds at the zoo so I walked right up to it. And, right on cue, out came a panda. I don’t know which one it was and don’t really care. It was cute as advertised. Probably saw it for five minutes before it was done strolling. Overall, pretty cool.

Naturally, there’s a nearby merchandise tent with those hats I’ve seen teenagers wear. I didn’t buy anything, but it was fun seeing the place again. I managed to also see the elephants, gorillas, a tiger that went after a ball with some scary fury, birds and monkeys.

Not a bad way to kill an hour. The only downside? After walking about 1 1/2 miles downhill, I had to scale it back. Managed to get a good workout, too.
